Social Cohesion

Social cohesion in schools creates an inclusive environment where students from diverse backgrounds feel valued and connected.

An inclusive environment

Social cohesion in schools creates an inclusive environment.

Social inclusion involves fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect.

We can help achieve this through:

  • inclusive curricula
  • cultural exchange programs
  • promoting values like empathy and cooperation.

We want schools with a supportive atmosphere where students are more likely to engage positively with each other. This reduces feelings of isolation and marginalisation.

An inclusive environment not only enhances academic performance – it also contributes to the overall wellbeing and development of students, preparing them to be productive members of society.

Countering violence, antisocial and extremist behaviour

Countering violence and extremism in schools helps to prevent radicalisation.

Schools play a significant role in early intervention by identifying and addressing signs of radicalisation such as:

  • sudden changes in behaviour
  • the adoption of extremist ideologies.

We offer professional learning to staff, training them to recognise these signs and provide appropriate support.

The power of schools

By promoting an inclusive school culture, Catholic schools can:

  • counteract the factors that contribute to violent extremism
  • foster resilience among students
  • safeguard the broader community.

We can also encourage students to resist extremist narratives and make informed decisions through:

  • integrating critical thinking
  • media literacy
  • conflict resolution skills.

NSW School Strategy

We have begun participating in a three-year cross-sector project with the NSW Department of Education to counter violence and extremism (CVE) in schools.

The school strategy focuses on raising awareness, prevention and early intervention. It aims to:

  • identify vulnerable young people
  • help them access appropriate support
  • proactively work with schools identified as vulnerable
  • to manage the risk posed by students who exhibit extremist, radical and antisocial behaviours
  • build the resilience of school communities to protect young people from radicalisation.

The strategy supports student wellbeing initiatives that increase school safety and encourage connected catholic communities.
