Supporting Students with Disability

Disability Standards for Education (DSE)

The Disability Standards for Education 2005 (The Standards) clarify the obligations of education and training providers and seek to ensure that students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as other students.

The Standards were formulated under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Cth) and came into effect in August 2005.

The Standards provide a framework to ensure that students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as other students.

They cover:

  • Enrolment, parental choice
  • Access and participation
  • Curriculum development, accreditation and delivery
  • Student support services
  • Elimination of harassment and victimisation.

The Standards support consultation, negotiation and collaboration between schools, families and services. Such processes need to maintain the dignity, respect, privacy, and confidentiality of the student/parent and her/his associates.

For more information visit the Disability Standards for Education 2005 website.

DSE Professional Learning

There are multiple options available for school staff to access DSE training.

A variety of DSE E-Learning Modules are available on the national portal for the NCCD.

We have developed a 1hr online Disability Standards for Education refresher module. There is a module available for teaching staff along with a module for support staff. Please note that these modules are for staff who have previously completed the relevant DSE module (as above), on the NCCD portal.

Diocesan schools can contact their diocesan office for details on how to access these modules.

RI/MPJP schools can contact the CSNSW Senior Manager, Diverse Learning.
