Governance training
Governance training for a Responsible Person is required by law in NSW.
Each person defined under The Education Act 1990 (NSW) as a ‘Responsible Person’ – and any other person or body exercising similar functions in a school – must undertake initial and ongoing professional learning as a key aspect of proper governance.
Initial training must:
- include NESA-approved training program delivered by a NESA-approved training provider (such as CSNSW) within three months of appointment as a ‘Responsible Person’.
Ongoing training must:
- be delivered by a NESA approved training provider (such as CSNSW).
- be at least 12 hours over three years.
Who are Responsible Persons?
Responsible persons for a school include:
- the proprietor of the school and, if the proprietor is a corporation, each director or person concerned in the management of the school
- a member of the governing body of the school
- the principal of the school.
Each responsible person for the school, and any other person or body having similar functions in relation to the school as those of such a responsible person, must be a fit and proper person or body. To be fit and proper for the role undertaken by Responsible Persons consideration should be given to, but not limited to,
- legal convictions
- financial management including any bankruptcy and insolvency
- convictions or charges in relation to children, dishonesty or violence
- any determination of not being fit and proper in any Australian state or territory
- immoral or unethical behaviour
- being a responsible person for a school or proposed school whose registration was cancelled or refused.
Our governance training
We provide NESA-approved online governance training for all Responsible Persons in Catholic schools and school authorities.
- The training consists of a series of one-hour online modules.
- Responsible Persons can access these governance training modules through Catholic Schools NSW Professional Learning.
We also host an annual NESA approved Education Law Symposium. Full attendance at the Symposium contributes to governance hours for Responsible Persons.
