Commonwealth Government Early Childhood Initiatives

Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)

The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) data helps schools plan for the needs of children arriving at school for the first time.

It assists schools to help identify areas where children and families in the community need additional support.

It aims to achieve positive results in the areas of:

  • physical health and wellbeing
  • social competence
  • emotional maturity
  • language and cognitive skills
  • communication skills and general knowledge.

Find public data on the Data Explorer website.

The 2024 AEDC Data Collection

Schools with kindergarten students participated in the 2024 AEDC data collection. Kindergarten teachers in all school sectors across NSW completed the research tool in term 2, 2024.

During this AEDC cycle, one hundred per cent of Catholic schools across NSW participated in the AEDC, confirming a continued strong commitment to the AEDC.

It was based on kindergarten teachers’ observations of the children in their class.

The AEDC provides vital information for schools (as well as government and the broader community) to pinpoint the services, resources and support needed to bring lifelong benefits to children and the whole community.

Key dates

  • Schools where data has been collected for six or more students without special needs now have access to their AEDC 2024 School Profile report to further support schools’ planning activities.
  • Schools can download their School Profile from the secure data collection system until 31 October 2024.
  • If you are unable to access your School Profile, please email helpdesk@aedc.gov.au.
  • The AEDC School Profile Addendum, which includes supplementary information to the School Profile including trends in state and national AEDC results, will be released in March 2025, coinciding with the public release of national and community results.

Professional development and paid practicum opportunities

The Commonwealth Government is supporting early childhood education and care (ECEC) providers to offer professional development opportunities to teachers and educators.

Support includes subsidies and an online network to help staff complete training and practicums.

  • Professional development subsidy: ECEC providers can apply for a subsidy to help qualified staff to complete training that adds to their skills.
  • Paid practicum subsidy: ECEC providers can get a subsidy to support early childhood teachers (ECTs) and educators in training to complete the practicum components of their degree.
  • Practicum exchange network: ECEC educators in training and services can register to join a practicum exchange network. Later in 2024, candidates will be able to search for and arrange exchange opportunities on a dedicated website.
