The Kathleen Burrow Research Institute is an initiative of Catholic Schools New South Wales. The Institute undertakes research on contemporary issues in school education in order to promote the advancement of education across all sectors. The research performed by the institute provides provides an opportunity for engagement with sector leaders and policy-makers and provides an evidence base in support of the advocacy work of Catholic Schools New South Wales.

National Career Institute Round Two Partnership Grants (Ref: 126/21)
Applications are now open for Round Two of the National Career Institute’s Partnership Grants program, with up to $525,000 available for projects that will improve career outcomes for adults and school students.
Projects will focus on adults seeking to re-enter the workforce or change careers, particularly those disadvantaged by COVID-19, as well as students at crucial transition stages in primary school and years 7 to 10.
A total of $6.1 million is available, with grants ranging from $20,000 to $525,000. The maximum period for each project is 18 months.

New dates added: Online Catholic Schools New South Wales Sector NCCD Moderation Live Webinar Series (Ref: 133/21)
New dates have been added for the Catholic Schools New South Wales NCCD live moderation training webinars. The training webinars provide baseline moderation activities and cross moderation opportunities for participants who may register for multiple sessions.
The webinars are open to staff from systemic and non-systemic Catholic schools and offices across NSW including: teachers, school counsellors and middle leaders.

Catholic Schools New South Wales 2021 DISruptABILITY Conference: Expression of Interest (Ref: 131/21)
There are approximately 45,000 students, comprising 19% of all students in NSW Catholic schools, with some degree of disability. Catholic schools provide for the needs of these students in a range of settings, including: mainstream schools, special schools, special assistance schools and satellite classes.
The two-day DISruptABILITY conference will be grounded in internationally recognised best-practice evidence. It will be an opportunity to engage critically with the disruptive trends in education and inspire in our Catholic school educators and leaders a continuing commitment to excellence which ensures every child achieves their potential in every classroom, every day.
The conference will be open to all school and system staff. The conference seeks to be inclusive of all those who provide educational support and care for students with disability in our schools.
Schools are encouraged to bring teams comprising of members of the school leadership team, learning support and/or diverse learning teachers, pastoral care and wellbeing coordinators, leaders of learning and/or pedagogy, classroom teachers and teachers’ aides. Schools may even wish to bring a parent and/or their parish priest as part of a school team.

Indigenous Veterans Commemoration - 28 May 2021 (Ref: 134/21)
The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Veterans & Services Association, supported by The Returned and Services League of Australia (NSW Branch) and the NSW Office for Veteran Affairs, will be conducting the Annual Indigenous Veterans Commemoration Ceremony on Friday 28 May 2021.
The Sydney ceremony is one of several being held across Australia during Reconciliation week in recognition of the service and sacrifice of indigenous veterans.
The commemoration service will be live streamed on the Anzac Memorial’s Facebook page allowing you the opportunity to view the service from your home or workplace.

Refugee week event for high schools (Ref: 128/21)
The UTS Centre for Social Justice & Inclusion and the Refugee Advice & Casework Service and presenting a special Refugee Week event for NSW high school students. Information attached and below:

Facilitated by Verity Firth, Executive Director of Social Justice, University of Technology Sydney, the panel includes:
- Hani Abdile, journalism student, writer and poet, she was forced to leave her home country of Somalia and come to Australia seeking protection in 2014.
- Bakhit David, arrived in Australia from Sudan when he was 17. He has been a volunteer interpreter at Mercy House of Welcome and volunteered at youth organisation, Rotaract Australia. He is currently studying Community Services at TAFE.
- Genevieve Howe, joined RACS legal team after working in Nauru. She has a strong background in volunteering with legal NGOs in Australia and overseas.
- Dorothy Hoddinott AO was principal of Holroyd High School where 60% of all students were of refugee background.
The theme of this years’ Refugee Week is Unity Moving Forward. The panel will discuss:
- The process for seeking safety in Australia
- What it’s like to be seeking asylum in Australia
- The challenges of living here on a Temporary Visa
- The challenges for refugee children and young people
- How young people can get involved in these social justice issues

Australian Olympic Change-Maker nominations are open (Ref: 129/21)
The Australian Olympic Change-Maker (OCM) program recognises and rewards students who are living the Olympic spirit through leadership and powering positive change in their communities.
Nominations are open to all Australian secondary schools and we invite your school to nominate up to two students per school from years 10-12 who are creating positive change.

The Teachers’ Guild of New South Wales (TGNSW) Awards are open to recognise outstanding educators in 2021.
Early Career Educator Award
The Early Career Educator Award is for early career teachers who currently work in either a primary or secondary school. Nominations are now open for the 2021 Awards for Teachers in their Early Years of Teaching, conducted annually by the Teachers’ Guild of New South Wales. There are two categories of Award, one for a secondary (7-12) teacher, and one for a primary (K-6) teacher. Only teachers in their second or third year of teaching are eligible for nomination.

Regional / Remote Teaching and Learning Excellence Award
The TGNSW Regional / Remote Teaching and Learning Excellence Award is an opportunity to give educators, in all sectors, the ability to share the material they have developed as a teaching and learning resource, which has been delivered as part of an online learning program. It allows for reflections of the educator’s course materials and instructional strategies and provides educators the opportunity to evaluate the effectiveness of the material, by assessing the achievement of the learning outcomes of students, as well as the level of rapport achieved by the educator.
These awards have been created to encourage excellence in the development of online resource materials which is accessed by students in regional / remote learning environments. The Teachers’ Guild of New South Wales will award two winners of $500 each from Regional / Remote Teaching and Learning applications associated with education delivery in any School sector, including TAFE, VET and University.

Applications for the Japanese Government’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) Scholarships (Research and Undergraduate) 2022 are now open.
