Catholic Schools NSW is pleased to announce that the 2nd Annual Kathleen Burrow Research Institute Lecture will take place next Wednesday, 5 October. The Lecture will be delivered by the Honourable Justice Jacqueline Gleeson SC, Justice of the High Court of Australia. Justice Gleeson will speak on “The High Court’s Contribution to Legal Education”. There is no cost to attend this event.

Catholic Schools NSW invites Catholic Schools New South Wales board members, school principals, relatives of Kathleen Burrow and other stakeholders in Catholic education to join us for this exciting and unique opportunity to hear from one of Australia’s most distinguished legal figures. Interested family members are also welcome to register.

The lecture will include a Q & A components and canapes and beverages following the event.

Professional Learning

National Copyright Unit - Licensing Educational Materials (Ref: 221/22)

The National Copyright Unit (NCU) has recently developed licensing educational materials responding to the practice of either departments of education, peak bodies or system authorities developing and sourcing curriculum resources to be shared with their schools.

The NCU recommends a consistent copyright licensing approach that ensures:

  1. Any resources created and shared do not attract remuneration under the statutory licence in s 113P of the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) (Statutory Text and Artistic Works Licence) (and consequently contribute to increases in national future copyright licence fees);
  2. It is clear to teachers how the resources can be used;
  3. The resources can be used in new or different educational ways in the future – such as in collaborations across departments, peak bodies and industry; and
  4. Compliance with open access policies.

The National Copyright Unit (NCU)  Fortnightly Q&A Sessions

The National Copyright Unit (NCU) is running fortnightly Q&A sessions on Thursdays from 12-1pm for curriculum and educational resource developers. This is an opportunity to ask questions about any copyright issues.

The Catholic Schools NSW – CSSA Catholic Secondary Schools Forum will be held on Thursday 3 November 2022 at the Sydney Masonic Centre, Sydney.

The Symposium theme ‘On the Horizon’ reflects our shared commitment to engaging in current and emerging issues in secondary education in Catholic schools. The symposium program will engage participants to reflect upon change within their school and beyond.

This event will bring together education and industry leaders to discuss current and emerging issues to extend the learning opportunities and outcomes available to students.

GEL GUNS - NSW Police Notification to Principals (216/22)

NSW Police would like to advise all school principals of the increased possession of gel guns by young people in NSW. These guns can be purchased legally in Queensland (Gold Coast) but are illegal in NSW and are considered to be firearms.

NSW Police have advised that if a student is found to have a gel gun they can be arrested and charged for possession of a firearm (pursuant to section 36(1)  Firearms Act 1996 (NSW)).

In the interest of community safety and student welfare, NSW police have requested all school principals disseminate the attached information to their school communities.

School Newsletter

NSW Children's Week Art Competition (Ref: 222/22)

The Office of the Advocate for Children and Young People together with the NSW Children’s Week Council is inviting entries for the NSW Children’s Week 2022 Art Competition. The competition will close on Friday, 7 October with the winner to be announced during Children’s Week.

The competition is open to all children and young people up to the age of 18 living in NSW. Children and young people can enter by creating an artwork that shows what they do for fun (dressing up in your favourite costume, eating your favourite food or playing with friends) or they can create an artwork that shows them doing something that makes them feel healthy and happy.

Artworks can include drawings, paintings, photographs, digital illustrations or videos. It’s not about being a good artist, it’s about children and young people finding inspiration and sharing their voice through art.

Nine winners (three winners for each age group: Under 5, 6-11, 12-18) will receive an award and prize.

  • First prize $200 gift card
  • Second prize $100 gift card
  • Third prize $50 gift card.

Class submissions are also welcome.

UPDATE: Fruit and Veg Month 2022 (Ref: 218/22)

Resources

For schools that have opted to run Fruit & Veg Month in Term 4, resources will continue to be available on the Fruit & Veg Month 2022 resources page.

There are extra hardcopy resources available to distribute to registered schools. If schools would like to be mailed packs consisting of 7 posters and 14 sticker sheets, they must email: [email protected].

Student competition

The student competition will close on 5.00pm Friday 14 October.

Winners will be notified on Wednesday 19 October. They will be mentioned on the student competition webpage and in an e-newsletter scheduled for Friday 21 October.

Coordinators would have received an email from SurveyMonkey with a link to complete a short survey. Alternatively, they can access the survey here.

There is also a survey for parents/carers to provide feedback on the Family Challenge resource.

 


Childcare and Participation Fund Survey - NSW Government's Early Years Commitment (211/22)

The NSW Government’s Early Years Commitment (EYC) is a historic investment to transform early childhood education and care. It is a commitment to change the future for children and families across the state. A flagship component of the EYC is the plan to introduce universal pre-Kindergarten in the year before primary school by the end of the decade.

The NSW Department of Education has begun an open consultation period, seeking input into the Early Years Commitment.

Childcare and Participation Fund Survey

The Childcare and Participation Fund will provide $5 billion over 10 years to overcome barriers families face in accessing early childhood education and care. It will provide incentives to early childhood education and care (ECEC) providers to innovate and offer more places for young families. The Department of Education is asking the ECEC sector to highlight the key issues they are facing. The survey has 5 questions and should only take a few minutes to complete.

System leaders, early learning centres, pre-schools and early childhood education and care educators can complete the ‘Childcare and Participation Fund survey’.

APPLICATIONS OPEN - Federal Government's Youth Steering Committee (210/22)

The Federal Government is establishing a Youth Steering Committee to enable young Australians to help shape future Australian policies and programs.

Applications are now open to young Australians aged between 12 and 25 who wish to apply. The Committee will help to develop a new Youth Engagement Model and create meaningful opportunities for young Australians to work with the Government on the issues that matter to them. The Youth Steering Committee will include up to 15 young people from diverse backgrounds across Australia, with applicants not requiring any previous experience to apply.

2023 CSSA Trial HSC Examinations - Preliminary Information (Ref: 199/22)

The following information is provided to schools in preparation of their 2023 school calendars:

  • The 2023 CSSA Trial HSC Examinations are scheduled for Monday 31 July to Monday 14 August with a security period up to and including 8am, Thursday 17 August 2023.
  • The 2023 dates for online ordering including disability provisions are available on the CSSA website here.
  • The 2023 DRAFT CSSA Trial HSC Examinations Timetable will be available on the CSSA website from Week 2, Term 2 2023.
