The Catholic Schools NSW – CSSA Catholic Secondary Schools Forum will be held on Thursday 3 November 2022 at the Sydney Masonic Centre, Sydney.
The Symposium theme ‘On the Horizon’ reflects our shared commitment to engaging in current and emerging issues in secondary education in Catholic schools. The symposium program will engage participants to reflect upon change within their school and beyond.
This event will bring together education and industry leaders to discuss current and emerging issues to extend the learning opportunities and outcomes available to students.

Catholic Schools NSW invites Principals, School Leadership, Key Learning Area Coordinators, VET Coordinators, Career Practitioners and Stage 4–6 Year Coordinators in Catholic education to join us at the Catholic Schools New South Wales CSSA Catholic Secondary Schools Forum ‘On the Horizon’ Symposium.
EVENT DETAILS
Date: Thursday 3 November 2022
Time: Registration opens at 8am for commencement at 8.30am-4:00pm
Location: Sydney Masonic Centre – 66 Goulburn Street, Sydney.
The location is close to Museum Train Station, the Light Rail, Buses or Secure Parking Stations.
Cost: There is NO COST to attend the Symposium.
NESA Elective PD
This professional learning can be recorded as 5hours and 30minutes of NESA Elective PD addressing the following Australian Professional Standards for Teachers:
- 6.3.2 Contribute to collegial discussions and apply constructive feedback from colleagues to improve professional knowledge and practice.
- 7.4.2 Participate in professional and community networks and forums to broaden knowledge and improve practice

School Counsellor Webinar: Managing Suicidality and Self-Harm (Ref: 229/22)
Catholic Schools NSW launched systemwide guidelines for managing students with suicidality and self-harm on 12 September 2022. These were developed in response to an increasing number of students presenting with these issues and were developed in partnership with The Black Dog Institute.
In order to assist with the roll out of these guidelines, The Black Dog Institute will be presenting a webinar on Thursday 27 October 2022 from 3:30pm -4:30pm.

Professional Learning Opportunity - LivingWorks (Ref: 230/22)
The NSW Government is providing free workshops on suicide reduction for staff involved with students from years 9-12. The training is supplied by LivingWorks.
A free demonstration workshop will be held at the Mantra Chatswood on 1 November 2022.
The workshop will allow staff to complete this 3-hour training (NESA accredited). It will be followed by lunch & a meeting regarding general issues affecting the mental health and wellbeing of Catholic school students. Focus is on schools based on Sydney’s North Shore & Northern Beaches.

National Copyright Unit - Licensing Materials (Ref: 221/22)
The National Copyright Unit (NCU) has recently developed licensing educational materials responding to the practice of either departments of education, peak bodies or system authorities developing and sourcing curriculum resources to be shared with their schools.
The NCU recommends a consistent copyright licensing approach that ensures:
- Any resources created and shared do not attract remuneration under the statutory licence in s 113P of the Copyright Act 1968 (Cth) (Statutory Text and Artistic Works Licence) (and consequently contribute to increases in national future copyright licence fees);
- It is clear to teachers how the resources can be used;
- The resources can be used in new or different educational ways in the future – such as in collaborations across departments, peak bodies and industry; and
- Compliance with open access policies.

The National Copyright Unit (NCU) Fortnightly Q&A Sessions
The National Copyright Unit (NCU) is running fortnightly Q&A sessions on Thursdays from 12-1pm for curriculum and educational resource developers. This is an opportunity to ask questions about any copyright issues you may have.

Managing Bomb Threats in Schools including During HSC Exams – Safety Alert (Ref: 231/22)
As we enter the 2022 HSC examination period, all Principals are being asked to monitor the school for potential bomb threats.
In October 2020 a number of schools received threats during the HSC exams which caused significant disruption to HSC Examinations. A number of schools received a threatening email stating there is a ‘functioning bomb in your school’ via the school email account. Schools should be aware that these threats can be received through both phone and online communication.
Upon receipt of a bomb threat schools MUST:
Call 000 (triple zero) immediately and promptly relay all information to NSW Police. (NB: The NSW Department of Education’s Serious Incident Report Hotline will be automatically advised of the threat by police)
If the threat relates to a bomb being present on the school site, the school should activate its critical incident plan and arrange an immediate evacuation, which is to be maintained until such time as Police attend and the site is deemed safe to re-enter.
All schools must ensure their evacuation area for bomb threats or suspected devices is an identified and cleared space, far enough away from the school to prevent people being injured by glass or other material if an explosion occurs.
No one should touch, tilt or tamper with a suspicious object in case it is an explosive or incendiary device.
Systemic schools should also notify their diocesan schools office and RI/MPJP schools should notify Catholic Schools NSW – David Walker (0432 335 695 or [email protected]).

Fruit and Veg Month 2022 - Student Competition Closes THIS FRIDAY (Ref: 218/22)
Resources
For schools that have opted to run Fruit & Veg Month in Term 4, resources will continue to be available on the Fruit & Veg Month 2022 resources page.
There are extra hardcopy resources available to distribute to registered schools. If schools would like to be mailed packs consisting of 7 posters and 14 sticker sheets, they must email: [email protected].
Student competition
The student competition will close on 5.00pm Friday 14 October.
Winners will be notified on Wednesday 19 October. They will be mentioned on the student competition webpage and in an e-newsletter scheduled for Friday 21 October.
Surveys
Coordinators would have received an email from SurveyMonkey with a link to complete a short survey. Alternatively, they can access the survey here.
There is also a survey for parents/carers to provide feedback on the Family Challenge resource.
CLOSING TOMORROW - Childcare and Participation Fund Survey - NSW Government's Early Years Commitment (211/22)
The NSW Government’s Early Years Commitment (EYC) is a historic investment to transform early childhood education and care. It is a commitment to change the future for children and families across the state. A flagship component of the EYC is the plan to introduce universal pre-Kindergarten in the year before primary school by the end of the decade.
The NSW Department of Education has begun an open consultation period, seeking input into the Early Years Commitment.
Childcare and Participation Fund Survey
The Childcare and Participation Fund will provide $5 billion over 10 years to overcome barriers families face in accessing early childhood education and care. It will provide incentives to early childhood education and care (ECEC) providers to innovate and offer more places for young families. The Department of Education is asking the ECEC sector to highlight the key issues they are facing. The survey has 5 questions and should only take a few minutes to complete.
System leaders, early learning centres, pre-schools and early childhood education and care educators can complete the ‘Childcare and Participation Fund survey’.
