2023 CSSA Trial HSC Examinations: Expressions of Interest For Convenors (Ref: 114/22)

The CSSA provides teachers and students in schools throughout New South Wales, ACT and internationally with high quality Trial HSC Examinations that will provide a sound basis for their preparation for the HSC examinations later in the year.

The CSSA Trial HSC Examinations are prepared by committees of practicing teachers, university lecturers and education consultants in a variety of HSC courses.

The Head of CSSA Exams is seeking expressions of interest for Convenor of the following 2023 CSSA Trial HSC Examinations:

  • Chemistry
  • Physics

2022 Student Attendance (STATS) Semester 1 Data Collection (Ref: 129/22)

The 2022 Student Attendance (STATS) Semester 1 data collection will open in SchoolsHUB on Monday 27 June 2022 and close on Friday 5 August 2022.

Student Attendance (STATS) collects student attendance rate data by grade, gender and Indigeneity from non-government (Catholic and Independent) schools for:

  • Semester 1 and Term 3 reporting periods,
  • Full-time students in Years 1 to 10 attending regular and special schools, and
  • Each individual location (campus).

Approved Authorities complete the STATS collection for each reporting period under the Australian Education Act 2013 and associated regulations. Student attendance rates are published annually on ACARA’s My School website and contribute high level data for ACARA’s National Report on Schooling in Australia and the Productivity Commission Report on Government Services.

The 2022 STATS collection process includes:

  1. Semester 1 Student Attendance – schools must provide and declare their Semester 1 data during the period Monday 27 June until Friday 5 August
  2. Term 3 Student Attendance – schools must provide and declare their Term 3 data during the period Monday 19 September until Friday 14 October.

Registrations Open: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Conference 2022 (Ref: 120/22)

Catholic Schools NSW and Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta are co-hosting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education Conference 2022, Transforming with the Spirit. The Conference will take place from 11 to 13 October 2022.

The Conference seeks to bring together education and community practitioners to share unique perspectives on building systems and practices that allow Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families to thrive.  The Conference aims to explore effective and culturally appropriate strategies and current practices targeted towards ‘Closing the Gap’ in educational outcomes.

The program will feature presentations, on country experiences and discussion panels from local and national keynote speakers.  There will be up to 50 sessions for participants to be immersed in.

Registrations are NOW OPEN, with an early bird special available until 25 July.

K-2 Mathematics Module: Developing a Mental Map of the Syllabus (Ref: 127/22) 

Join Dr Christine Mae in a 75- minute online, on-demand module designed to support understanding of the intent, structure, organisation and language of the new K-2 Mathematics Syllabus, through the module Developing a Mental Map of the Syllabus. This is the first in a series of 14 modules being offered by Catholic Schools NSW in partnership with Dr Christine Mae.

Completing the  K-2 Mathematics module will contribute 1 hour of NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Accredited PD in the priority area of Delivery and Assessment of NSW Curriculum/ EYLF addressing standard descriptors 2.1.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

2021 Principal Wellbeing Survey Results- Discussion of Key Themes (Ref: 123/22)

Let’s Talk About Principal Care is back for Term 2. Principals and senior leaders are invited to join Catholic Schools New South Wales and Dr Paul Kidson to share the findings of the 2021 Principal Health and Wellbeing Survey. The discussion will focus on the key themes established by the survey and Principal agency.

Dr Kidson’s diverse educational career includes teaching in multicultural schools in Sydney’s western suburbs, socio-educationally advantaged metropolitan schools, 11 years’ as a school principal, and an academic since 2017. His teaching and research explores how school leaders work within, and critically transform, their complex professional lives. This encompasses broader systems and policies that govern their work and school communities, as well as how they develop and sustain their personal leadership story.

Dr Kidson has a particular role in promoting and sharing the findings from The Australian Principal Occupational Health, Safety and Wellbeing Survey 2021 Data on behalf of the Australian Catholic University’s Institute for positive Psychology and Education.

OAIC Video Guide to Rights and Obligations - Operation of APP 12- Access to Personal Information (Ref: 118/22)

The Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) has developed two videos to help educate the public and APP entities about the operation of APP 12 – access to personal information.

The first video, targeting complainants, outlines the complainant’s rights and obligations in making a request for personal information with an APP entity under APP 12.  Access the complainant video here.

The second video, targeting respondents, outlines the respondent’s rights and responsibilities under APP 12 once an access request is received. Access the respondent video here.

Both  videos seek to give each party an insight into the other’s rights and obligations and assist in building an understanding which facilitates dispute resolution.

Modern Slavery Statement Reminder- Modern Slavery Statements for FY2021 due 30 June 2022 (Ref: 125/22)

The Modern Slavery Act 2018 (Cth) (‘the Act’) commenced in 2019 and requires entities with a consolidated revenue above $100 million in the 2021 Financial Year to submit an annual modern slavery statement, outlining how they are addressing the risks of modern slavery in their businesses and supply chains.

Entities covered by the Act with a reporting period between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021 must submit their modern slavery statements for FY2021 by 30 June 2022. A failure to submit by this date may lead to the Minister for Home Affairs taking action against the entity.

2022 Year 1 Phonics Screening Check – Registrations Open (Ref :126/22)

The Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, developed by the NSW Department of Education, is an optional online reading assessment available to Catholic Schools NSW with a Year 1 student cohort.

Schools that choose to use the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check will have the flexibility to schedule the assessment to best suit their school and student needs within the assessment window.

NSW Government Everyday Maths Club Campaign Resources (Ref: 113/22)

The NSW Government have announced a campaign to change perceptions of maths among young people.

The  new resources have been launched within the Everyday Maths hub on the NSW Government website, providing students and parents with new maths solutions, challenges, games and fun experiences.  These new resources encourage and support parents, carers and students from various backgrounds to think and act mathematically.

A new feature of the hub is a dedicated culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) section across five different languages and  contains more than 30 new pieces of content related to financial literacy, mathematics in careers, and mathematics in the modern world.

New NSW Health Campaign- Vaping Resources for Schools (Ref: 116/22)

NSW Health has released a new state-wide vaping campaign which outlines key information regarding vaping, the consequences of young people vaping and the way to disperse information correctly surrounding the topic. The campaign resources also include a vaping toolkit.

The Resource includes information that is specifically tailored for the various relevant groups involved in educating students on vaping: young people, parents and carers, teachers and schools and health professionals. Further, it provides access to avenues available to encourage and support students to quit vaping.

HSC Minimum Standards- Calls for EOIs: Assessment Item Development  (Ref: 124/22)

NESA (NSW Education Standards Authority) is seeking expressions of interest from teachers and academics with appropriate experience and qualifications to participate in item development activities for the Minimum Standard Reading, Numeracy and Writing Tests. Teachers from all subject areas are welcome.

HSC minimum standard reading and numeracy test items are developed by committees working closely with a Senior Assessment Officer. HSC minimum standard writing test items are developed through writing workshops under the guidance of assessment experts.

Expressions of interest may be submitted throughout the year. Suitable candidates will be contacted when a vacancy is available.

ClubsNSW Premier's WWII Memorial Tour- Opportunity for NSW High School Students to Visit Historic WWII Sites (Ref: 121/22)

ClubsNSW is funding an initiative which seeks to give six Year 11 students from across NSW the opportunity to visit historic WWII sites in Japan and America.

Students will travel to Hiroshima, Tokyo and Pearl Harbor as part of the 11-day ClubsNSW Premier’s WWII Memorial Tour in July 2022, from 21 to 31 July 2022.

In order to be selected by ClubsNSW, students must submit a 1000-word essay answering the question ‘Are the lessons of WWII still relevant today?’. Submissions are due by 5pm, on 13 June 2022. 

The winners will be announced on 20 June 2022.

The group of selected students will depart Sydney on 21 July and return on 31 July. Year 11 students must be aged 16 or 17 to be eligible for this opportunity.

Entries OPEN- CCSP 2022 Roger O’Sullivan Memorial Award for Family, School and Community Partnerships for Learning (Ref: 128/22)

Entries are now open for the 2022 Roger O’Sullivan Memorial Award, run by the Council of Catholic School Parents

The 2022 Roger O’Sullivan Memorial Award for Family, School and Community Partnerships for Learning is awarded to a school community, including parents and carers, that can demonstrate exemplary practice in building partnerships between home and school to enhance the learning outcomes of students. These projects may focus on faith formation, the school curriculum, student wellbeing, or any combination of the three.

The recipient of the 2022 Roger O’Sullivan Memorial Award will receive a tailored publicity campaign and $4,000 to further the initiative.  More information and an application form are available here.
