Registrations Closing Soon - “Dangerous Ideas” Symposium – Vocational Education & Training (VET)

Catholic Schools NSW is facilitating the “Dangerous Ideas” Symposium – which will give focus to Vocational Education & Training (VET) delivered to Secondary Students.

This event will bring together key industry and Catholic school leaders, system educators, VET trainers and career practitioners to discuss current issues and opportunities surrounding VET in NSW Catholic schools. The agenda has been provided for your information.

The symposium seeks to discuss how to best extend and improve educational pathways, opportunities, and outcomes currently available to secondary students.

The event is hosted by Catholic Schools New South Wales and CSSA, a division of Catholic Schools New South Wales.

Who should attend: Principals, School Leadership, Post-School Pathways Coordinators, VET Coordinators, Career Practitioners and Stage 5-6 Year Coordinators.

CSSA Trial HSC Examinations – FINAL Timetable & Revised 2022 Terms and Conditions (Ref: 096/22)

2022 CSSA Trial HSC Examinations FINAL Timetable

The 2022 CSSA Trial HSC Examinations FINAL Timetable was made available to schools on Tuesday 26 April.

The timetable is available on the CSSA website here.

Dates for the 2022 CSSA Trial HSC Examination Timetable: 

Monday 1 August to Monday 15 August 2022.

CSSA Trial HSC Examinations Security Period is: 

Up to, and inclusive of, Wednesday 17 August 2022.

Examinations, related examination materials and student scripts are not to be returned to students until 8am, Thursday 18 August 2022.

Delivery Rounds 

  • First Round Deliveries – Schools that have ordered examinations per cohort and using the 2022 CSSA Trial HSC Examination Timetable. These orders will be delivered to schools from Tuesday 19 July to Friday 22 July 2022 (Week 1, Term 3).
  • Second Round Deliveries – Schools that have purchased a minimum order of examinations (5 copies per subject). These orders will be delivered to schools from Monday 5 September 2022 (Week 8, Term 3).

Revised 2022 CSSA Terms and Conditions 
Principals are reminded to ensure the CSSA Terms and Conditions are followed by all teachers and other staff members.

The current Terms and Conditions for the CSSA Examinations do not permit schools to upload or transmit the examinations electronically.

Given the circumstances schools are still facing, the CSSA has agreed to revise the 2022 Terms and Conditions to allow schools who have students isolating at home due to COVID-19, to conduct the 2022 CSSA Trial HSC Examinations by remote means, where the students are well enough to undertake the examination. Otherwise, students should follow the school-based Illness/Misadventure process.

Principals are asked to accept the new revised 2022 CSSA Terms and Conditions (via the link in the email from the Head of CSSA Exams) by 5pm, Friday 27 May 2022.

Use of Animals for Teaching and Research Purposes- 2022 Animal Research Authority form to complete (Ref: 092/22)

The use of animals in schools for educational purposes is governed by the Animal Research Act 1985 (NSW). Catholic Schools NSW meets a requirement of this Act by issuing an Animal Research Authority to each school annually.

Completing the Animal Research Authority form:

Accompanying this advice is the annual Animal Research Authority for the Principal and teachers who use animals to complete and retain within the school. Both pages of the Authority need to be completed. The names of teachers approved by the Principal to handle animals should be listed on the second page of the Authority, along with each teacher’s signature.

The Animal Welfare Liaison Officer, appointed by the principal, must also be identified. The Principal is the Animal Welfare Liaison Officer in Schools for Specific Purposes, in primary and infants schools. In central and secondary schools, it is generally the teacher most qualified to supervise the use of animals for teaching and research purposes. The information on page two of the Animal Research Authority must be updated when changes in personnel occur at the school. The Animal Research Authority must be retained at the school and made available to appropriately authorised people including Catholic Schools NSW representatives, inspectors from the NSW Department of Primary Industries Animal Welfare Unit and officers involved with, and members of, the Schools Animal Care and Ethics Committee.

Catholic Schools NSW has been issued the renewal certificate of accreditation, pursuant to Part 4, Division 2 of the Animal Research Act 1985 (NSW) (the Act) and is a record that authorises the accreditation holder to operate as an Animal Research Establishment. The certificate is valid until 18 April 2025.

Position Available- Executive Director, Council of Catholic School Parents (CCSP) (Ref: 093/22)

The Organisation

The Council of Catholic School Parents NSW/ACT (CCSP) is a private association and incorporated entity established by the Bishops of NSW/ACT.

The primary purpose of the Council is to provide leadership, advocacy and support to parents of Catholic school students in NSW/ACT, and to represent their interests at state and national levels.

CCSP is seeking an experienced and driven educator and senior executive to lead and take forward the organisation. The Executive Director is supported by the CCSP Secretariat and other office staff.

The Role

Reporting to the Chair of CCSP and members of the management committee, the Executive Director will provide leadership by working strategically and collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders, including the CCSP Secretariat, Catholic Schools NSW (Catholic Schools New South Wales), Department of Education NSW; and Catholic Education school authorities.

You will provide a broad range of advice and respond on behalf of CCSP to all levels of government and political parties, education authorities within and outside the Catholic sector and individual parents.

As well as responsibility for the sound financial management of the CCSP Secretariat, you will be responsible for managing staff of the Secretariat and ensuring their professional development.

You will represent CCSP in various forums, committees, taskforces and other working parties relating to education at national and state level and within the Catholic sector.

The role is a permanent, full-time position based in Sydney CBD. For the right candidate, consideration may be given to flexible working arrangements. Some travel will be required throughout NSW from time to time.

About You

Key to this role is your extensive leadership and strategic planning skills, education background, and understanding of the unique characteristics of not-for-profit organisations.

Specifically, as the successful candidate you will ideally meet the following Key Requirements:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications (e.g. Education, Business, Politics) and/or equivalent experience
  • Strong empathy with the goals and purposes of Catholic education
  • An appreciation of and active commitment to Catholic life and practice
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of running a not-for-profit organisation, in particular, the peculiarities of a volunteer-based organisation
  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of the broad educational environment at state and national levels; Catholicity in terms of diocesan and religious institute structures; and the political structure and responsibilities of governments at state and national levels
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, persuasive negotiation, presentation and research skills; and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and establish and maintain positive stakeholder relationships
  • Ability to synthesise large amounts of information to understand complex policy issues
  • Demonstrated ability to manage time and workload
  • Strong IT skills

Indigenous Veterans Commemoration - 27 May 2021 

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Veterans & Services Association, supported by The Returned and Services League of Australia (NSW Branch) and the NSW Office for Veteran Affairs, will be conducting the Annual Indigenous Veterans Commemoration Ceremony on Friday 27 May 2021. This ceremony is supported by Catholic Schools NSW.

The Sydney ceremony is one of several being held across Australia during Reconciliation week in recognition of the service and sacrifice of indigenous veterans.

The commemoration service will be live streamed on the Anzac Memorial’s Facebook page allowing you the opportunity to view the service from your home or workplace.

2022 HSC Exam timetable RELEASED (NSW) (Ref: 094/22)

On Friday, 29 April 76,000 NSW students received their personalised timetable for the 2022 written HSC exams.

HSC written exams will start on Wednesday 12 October 2022 with English Paper 1 and finish on Friday 4 November 2022. 

Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said the release of the HSC timetable marks the final stage of the school journey for Year 12 students. “The release of the HSC timetable confirms for the Class of 2022 that they are on the home straight of their high school education,” Ms Mitchell said. “These students have managed an incredibly challenging final two years of school. They should be proud of what they’ve achieved and I wish them all the best in their HSC exams.”
